Roy Rada has a B.A. in Psychology from Yale University, a M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Univ. Illinois in Urbana. After completing his M.D., he earned a license to practice medicine but then accepted a NIH Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Illinois to work on healthcare informatics. He was in the mid-1980s the Editor of Index Medicus at the National Library of Medicine, in the early 1990s a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool, and in the late 1990's the Boeing Distinguished Professor of Software Engineering at Washington State University. Roy retired as Professor Emeritus of Information Systems from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2015.
In Liverpool Roy founded the 'Many Using and Creating Hypermedia' research group that earned millions in European funding. In the early 2000s, he was a prominent national consultant on the topic of HIPAA for health care information systems. Roy is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and has authored over two hundred peer-reviewed articles and twenty books. His main research interest has always been how software can replace people.
Roy's health is failing secondary to the long-term adverse effects of radiation for his 2003 neck cancer. He currently tracks the progress in artificial intelligence and works on that portion of his estate plan that
aims to preserve a legacy of contributing to progress with artificial intelligence.
